Today’s blog post might be my most unique one to date. Before I tell you all about Red Bull Flugtag, I thought I’d do you one better and show you. *Spoiler alert* This DeLorean is going to Marty McFly straight into the Cumberland.
Isn’t that crazy? We watched vessels just like this one plunge into the river with a driver at the helm all day long… and we loved it! Flugtag or “flight day” was held in Nashville this year and sponsored by Red Bull. I just want to make sure everyone understands the pun that’s going on here. Red Bull gives you wings and they sponsor “flight day”. I love it.
There was a skit portion of the competition that took place before the driver attempted to fly. Most teams danced to a song that fit their theme. “Powered by Dolly” danced while “9 to 5” played. The Nashville YMCA team dressed as Village People. The team with the DeLorean float played an audio clip from “Back to the Future” and acted it out. You get the idea! Let’s take a look at the different teams. They really got into it this year!

They all had great names too like “Jesus Take the Wheel” pictured above with Laura as well as “Hat Trick Catfish” and “Back to the Street Boyz”. There were over 30 team entries and sadly no one went far but it was certainly fun to watch. Red Bull provided the crowd with FREE RED BULL to drink while we watched. I was wired for sound, y’all. Think of Jim Carrey in “Yes Man”. It was unbearably hot outside but watching Flugtag was worth sitting in a convection oven.
Now for the part everyone came to see… people going into the river. The glory is in the ridiculousness of competing not who goes the farthest so keep that in mind.

Of course there were rescue personnel waiting in the water in case the unthinkable happened but I am pleased to report that everyone got out of the water safely. We had an amazing day getting completely sunburned and drinking too much Red Bull. Now I have even more memories to share with Chris and Laura. The city of Nashville came out in full force for the festivities as always!

Hopefully you had as much looking at our pictures of Red Bull Flugtag as we did while we experienced it. They change hosting locations often so take a look at Red Bull’s website to see where they’ll be next year! My only tip would be to bring extra sunscreen!
Until next time,
Carly
