Charleston Memorial Day Weekend Guide

Hey everyone! I hope you all had a relaxing Memorial Day Weekend. We went to Charleston, South Carolina for the first time and had a blast. I wanted to share the details of our trip with y’all.

Where We Stayed

We stayed at an AirBnb located in Mt. Pleasant and the location was perfect. We were a short drive from Charleston and the beaches. Message me if you want the exact address!

Where We Ate

I was worried that we wouldn’t be able to get into any restaurants since Charleston is already such a popular destination and it was a holiday weekend. My biggest recommendation would be to make reservations ahead of time. I used Open Table and Resy for our meals and it was super easy to book everything. We were able to get reservations at The Darling Oyster Bar for lunch, Ms. Rose’s for dinner, The Watch Rooftop Bar for dinner, and Poogan’s Porch for brunch on our last day. Every meal I had was phenomenal. You’re guaranteed fresh seafood since you’re practically on the beach. I’m a massive shrimp and grits fan so I was in Heaven because it was on the menu everywhere we went.

If I had to say which restaurant was our favorite I think it’s safe to say it was brunch at Poogan’s Porch. My husband described the texture of the biscuits as “cloud-like fluffiness” and the waffles were worth all the extra insulin my pancreas was no doubt forced to produce.

The Beaches

Charleston is close to quite a few beaches. We made it to Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island while we were in town. I liked Sullivan’s Island the best because it was more secluded and calm. However, Isle of Palms allows dogs year round and anytime of day. I think we’ll visit Folly Beach next time to see how it compares.

What We Did

Besides eating and laying on the beach we went to the Night Market in Charleston on Saturday night where vendors sold things like artwork, homemade soaps, jewelry, etc. We spent Saturday night and Sunday afternoon exploring downtown. There was no one to rush us along and nowhere we “had” to be. We took our time going into shops and browsing.

A Rookie Mistake

Seeing the Angel Oak tree has been on my bucket list for a while now but I didn’t do my research and got there to see that the gate was locked. They were closed in observance of Memorial Day! It didn’t occur to me to check any sort of schedule because it’s a TREE. I had no idea it was surrounded by a giant fence. I stuck my camera through the fence, snapped a photo, and told that gorgeous tree I’d be back to see/hug her.

Short List for Next Time

Rainbow Row, the Pineapple Fountain, and Folly Beach

Restaurants-Butcher & Bee, Prohibition, 82 Queen, Taco Boy, 5Church
