I’m well out of my first trimester and I’ve been debating whether or not to post about my experience. In some cases, I’m the last of a group to get pregnant and in others I’m the first. I’m blessed to have friends who have already been through all the beauty and chaos but I wanted to have a record of my own to look back on when I’m feeling nostalgic. So here goes! You asked and I’m telling.
Q: Do you want a boy or a girl? Are you finding out?
A: We know we want more than one so we’re focusing on a healthy, full-term baby. We are definitely finding out. We had to wait until later in the pregnancy for another ultrasound due to insurance reasons. Our reveal party plans have been squashed due to COVID-19 which is a major let down but Chris is going to make it special for me.
Q: Were you sick during your first trimester?
A: YES. YEP. INDEED. I wasn’t vomiting the whole time but I had overwhelming nausea and fatigue. I was nauseous all day every day for about 14 weeks. Usually it was the worst at night so I had to learn to eat early and eat something small.
Q: What are you craving?
A: During my first trimester it was Mexican food and anything chocked full of carbs. Macaroni and cheese was a food group all on its own. I had tons of aversions as well. I couldn’t stand the sight of raw meat. I still can’t eat fish or onions both of which I love. I also couldn’t eat any fruit except strawberries without getting sick. Even now the strawberry cravings are real. I can go through a carton a day.
Q: How are you decorating the nursery?
A: Decorating has never been my gift. Honestly, it stresses me out a tiny bit. The easiest thing to do is take all my Harry Potter stuff and put it in one room and call it a theme. I’m interested to see how it turns out.
Q: Is Joe acting differently?
A: Absolutely. He doesn’t let me out of his sight. He has to be touching my belly whenever possible. I can’t get a single second of privacy which I’m sure is preparing me for children. He already listens to Chris and ignores me so I’m getting broken in quickly.
Q: How has COVID-19 affected your pregnancy?
A: We had a few trips planned including a family vacation to Charleston that got cancelled. We haven’t gotten to see Chris’ family at all since we got pregnant. My OB’s office encouraged me to wash my hands and wear a mask when I leave the house. They also encouraged social distancing and staying home whenever possible. As I mentioned before, we also had to cancel our reveal party. I’m hopeful to have a baby shower even it’s late in my pregnancy. I can’t even begin to imagine how other moms must feel who have delivered alone or haven’t been able to see family during a time when support and socialization keep you sane. I’m praying for all moms right now.
Q: Are you using a doctor or midwife?
A: Both! I have a midwife for regular appointments and she will deliver me if I have a vaginal delivery. I also have an OB/GYN in case I need a cesarean section. I’m incredibly happy with my OB group and I feel very fortunate to have them. I’m hoping for an uncomplicated birth so we covet your prayers for that outcome.
I hope you enjoyed the first trimester Q + A! I cannot wait to celebrate Mother’s Day for the first time with a completely different perspective… and a big bowl of strawberries. Praying for health, safety, and peace for everyone during this time.
